Why feather shaft thickness and curvature govern shuttlecock lifespan
Every regulation feather shuttlecock uses 16 overlapping feathers planted at a precise angle into a 25–28 mm cork base. Goose wing feathers grow longer and develop a thicker, naturally arched central shaft (rachis) with higher keratin wall density than standard duck feathers. When struck at 26–30 lbs string tension, a goose feather shaft flexes and rebounds before splitting, whereas thinner duck shafts fracture earlier under repeated overhead smashes.
02 / CIGU DUCK VS. WATER DUCK
Understanding the two main duck feather grades in Chinese manufacturing
In China’s Anhui and Zhejiang shuttlecock manufacturing belt, duck feathers are separated into Cigu duck (Muscovy-type / thick-shaft duck) and standard water duck. Cigu duck feathers have a noticeably thicker straight rachis and denser vane structure, making models such as Huiyu Tournament No. 2 (US$20.40/tube) and Durable No. 1 (US$19.10/tube) popular mid-tier club alternatives to goose feather. Washed water duck models (Y1–Y8, US$11.90–US$16.20/tube) reduce cost per dozen for high-volume academy basket feeding.
03 / PROCUREMENT STRATEGY
How clubs and distributors structure a 3-tier shuttlecock assortment
Rather than buying a single shuttlecock grade for every court activity, experienced clubs and distributors split orders into three functional tiers: (1) Goose feather with 3-layer cork for league matches and tournaments, (2) Full-round Cigu duck for regular club social nights, and (3) Washed water duck for junior coaching and warm-up drills. You can combine all three tiers into one 50-tube master carton shipment.
TECHNICAL FAQ
Key questions answered.
Direct engineering and procurement answers for international buyers.
Is high-grade Cigu duck feather better than low-grade goose feather?
For regular club play at moderate string tensions (22–26 lbs), Grade 1 full-round Cigu duck feather often outperforms low-grade, thin-shaft goose feather because the Cigu shaft is thicker and more uniform across all 16 feathers. For high-tension tournament play (27–31 lbs), Grade A goose feather remains superior.
How many feathers are in each Huiyu shuttlecock and what is the BWF weight standard?
Every Huiyu feather shuttlecock is manufactured with 16 natural feathers arranged at uniform 360-degree spacing, calibrated to the BWF standard weight window of 4.74 to 5.50 grams and a skirt diameter of 65 to 68 mm.
Does cold or dry indoor air affect goose and duck feathers differently?
Yes. Below 15 °C (59 °F) and 40% relative humidity, both goose and duck feather shafts lose moisture and become more brittle, though duck feathers dry out faster. Cold-climate clubs should order Speed 78 and store tubes at 50%–65% humidity prior to play.
Can I order a mixed sample pack of goose, Cigu duck and water duck models?
Yes. Use our sample request form to select 2 to 4 Huiyu models across goose, Cigu duck and water duck grades. Sample tubes (12 shuttlecocks per tube) typically dispatch within 3–5 business days via international air courier.
